Apuseni Mountains

GENERALITIES:

One of the most interesting elements of the natural offer Romania has got refers to the mountainous area. This area is very diverse, both from the accessibility point of view and from the provided facilities or tourist development possibilities' point of view. The highest mountain range in Romania is the Fagaras, reaching 2545 m. elevation on Moldoveanu Peak, while the lowest range is the Macin, reaching 467 m. elevation in its highest point. In between there are very diverse mountains, from the hilly-like, round-shaped Capatanii or Suhard, to the sharp Piatra Craiului or the massive, rocky and lake-filled Retezat or Parang. These mountains provide the tourist with many resting or active holidays opportunities.

A quite low but wide mountain, the Apuseni hosts an impressive karstic scenery, with many interesting sites generated by the water effect over the limestone background. There are over 200 caves, many gorges, avenes, deep dolinas and other such places that attract a lot of tourists. Especially as hikes can be anywhere from easy to difficult, these mountains can provide the perfect location for a great holiday. A trip in the Apuseni can be organized based on camping or on huts and hotels. Hikes can be made longer or shorter, while the nature-focused trip can be easily made more complex by adding more attractions, from villages to religious sites. Last, but not least, the Apuseni remain the most complex mountains in the country, where one can do them all, from rock climbing, to skiing, caving, walking, scuba-diving or camping.
