Ciucas Mountains
GENERALITIES:
One of the most interesting elements of the natural offer Romania has got refers to the mountainous area. This area is very diverse, both from the accessibility point of view and from the provided facilities or tourist development possibilities' point of view. The highest mountain range in Romania is the Fagaras, reaching 2545 m. elevation on Moldoveanu Peak, while the lowest range is the Macin, reaching 467 m. elevation in its highest point. In between there are very diverse mountains, from the hilly-like, round-shaped Capatanii or Suhard, to the sharp Piatra Craiului or the massive, rocky and lake-filled Retezat or Parang. These mountains provide the tourist with many resting or active holidays opportunities.
A mountain range pretty close to Bucharest, the Ciucas (1980 m.a.s.l. on Ciucas Peak) lie on a secondary road to Brasov, providing a pleasant ridge with scenic and bizarre rocks spread on green pastures. The whole ridge tour can be easily done, and, as an option, it is possible to continue to the WW1 Heroes Graveyard in Tabla Butii and then all the way along the sheepfold-covered Siriu Mountains, to Nehoiasu Village (one or two more days). Hikes can be done based on accommodation in a single hut or camping. Ciucas will always remain a beautiful and pleasant break from a city or from more difficult hikes in higher and more rugged mountain areas.
