Poiana Brasov
Possibly the best known and also the best fit for winter sports in the country, Poiana Brasov has been for years now a top attraction in Romania. It is located at about 1000 m. elevation. There are accommodation units rated from 1* to 4*, including bungalows, guesthouses, villas and hotels. For the winter sports fans, the resort has 9 slopes that come down of Postavaru Mountain (Postavaru Peak, 1802 m. elevation). The ski slopes cover over 20 km., with an elevation difference of 800 m. and good conditions for beginners, intermediate and advanced skiers. The resort also has 2 cable cars, 7ski-lifts and an open chairlift, meant to ease the access to the slopes or towards the mountain summit. In summertime there are several tourist paths, quite well marked and beaten, which lead to the summit, to Brasov City or towards Bucegi Mountains, over Spinarea Calului ("the Horse's Back") Ridge. At the entrance in the resort there is a horse-riding center. The resort also has a ski school, open 4 hours a day, 6 days a week, with the possibility of arranging private lessons at any time and for any duration desired. The average snow height in winter is 50-60 cm. from the end of December until March, the average winter temperature being -3°C.
Poiana Brasov has the biggest number of ski slopes in the country, more precisely 9. For the situation where it is required, the resort also has the equipment for producing artificial snow. The slopes are generally located close to the resort, being reachable by cable car or ski lifts. There are many hiking opportunities in the area, especially as Postavaru Mountains are linked to Bucegi Mountains over Spinarea Calului Ridge ("The Horse's Back"). The paths are generally easy or average, without any over demanding passage. Hereunder we provide a few ideas for those interested, with the remark that timings and difficulty levels are estimated, being subject to change as related to every person's physical abilities and mountaineering experience.
