Satu Mare

Satu Mare is one of the nicest cities in North-Western Romania. The buildings might not be the oldest around and the monuments might not make an individual outstanding image, but the city as a whole is very pretty and interesting. Among the places to visit, one can mark down:

  • the oldest building in town, a section of the County Museum
  • the City Hall, built in 1768-1772 in baroc style
  • the Roman-Catholic Cathedral (1785-1798), a neoclassical building with a monumantal portal with corinthean capitel columns
  • the Bishops' Palace, built in the 19th century in neoclassical style
  • the two interesting smaller buildings in Libertatii Square: Casa Ormos (19th century, neoclassical style); Casa Alba (1911-1912, secession style)
  • the Boot Makers' Building (1830, ecclectic style building)
  • the Church with Chains (built in the 18th century, during 19 years, in baroc style)
  • the Dacia Hotel (1902, after a Vienna contest winning project, one of the nicest buildings in secession style in Transylvania)
  • the North Theatre (1889, neoclassical style)
  • the Orthodox Cathedral (1932-1937), in a style having many Romanian traditional influrnces
