Wooden churches in Maramures
Maramures is the land of the wood. People living there are best carpenters and they are real artists when it comes to working the wood. Their houses, majestic gates and religious sites cannot better depict this idea, as they bear impressive carvings, superb traditional elements and symbols. The churches there are UNESCO sites and they are, even though simple and straight-forward, moving monuments of art. Especially in certain such villages which host these churches (Ieud, Surdesti, Barsana, Botiza, Poienile Izei a.o.), one can still see at times people dressed up in traditional outfits, as well as people working on traditional artefacts which they afterwards either sell or use themselves.
